Theme Explanation: Light Upon Light
O Allah, place within my heart light, and upon my tongue light, and within my ears light, and within my eyes light, and place behind me light, and in front of me light, and above me light, and beneath me light. O Allah, bestow upon me light.
The role of a physician is to guide patients through dark times, moments filled with uncertainty, fear, and the unknown. Yet, we often find ourselves walking through similar darkness. During our training, we face doubt, questioning whether we are capable, whether we will succeed, and how we will navigate challenges both within and beyond medicine.
This is why it is essential, no matter how far we progress in our careers, to never forget how much guidance we once needed and continue to need. It is Allah who creates a path when none seems visible and who brings light when everything feels uncertain.
The Du’aa of Light serves as a powerful reminder that Allah grants us guidance in all our faculties, our hearts, our sight, and our hearing, and surrounds us with light from every direction. We ask Him not only to guide us, but to make us a source of light for others so that through us, His light becomes a means of comfort and reassurance in their times of darkness.
Attaining this light requires more than words. It calls for sincerity in our intentions, a firm commitment to the Qur’an and Sunnah, and steadfastness in fulfilling our obligations as His servants through prayer, charity, fasting, and beyond. Through this, we hope to carry a light that is not only within us, but one that radiates outward to those who need it most.

This theme also invites attendees and speakers to reflect on how “light” manifests in both their personal and professional journeys. Whether through moments of clarity, hardship, growth, or service, each individual carries a unique relationship with this light.
Islam as a Light for Us: “The Light That Guides”
In times of uncertainty and difficulty, Islam serves as a source of grounding, clarity, and inner peace. It illuminates our path, offering purpose and direction when the world feels overwhelming or unclear.
Our Role in Medicine as a Light for Others: “The Light You Hold”
As students and professionals in medicine, we are entrusted with more than knowledge. We carry the responsibility of compassion, presence, and service. In moments when patients feel vulnerable, isolated, or afraid, we have the ability to be a source of comfort and reassurance. Through empathy, kindness, and integrity, we reflect the light we have been given.
